Mum & Bub
During pregnancy much of the advice is focused on the forthcoming birth; leaving many mums unprepared for the proceeding challenges.
Breastfeeding can be the toughest job in the world. Having been there twice with both my children (not managing for the first and exclusively pumping for the second) I am fully across the best, most nutrient dense way to nourish your child (and yourself!) whichever way the dice is rolled.
Weaning can be another daunting business. But get this right and you will significantly reduce your chances of having a fussy eater.
Do you recommend baby-led weaning?
Baby-led weaning is where infants pick up and self-feed with finger food. It can help with motor skills and autonomy over what babies choose to eat. Despite these benefits I still recommend purees if you are starting your child on solids between 4-7 months. At this age babies are very limited with what they can chew and if you do baby-led weaning strictly from this age it’s challenging to get all the nutrients in; particularly iron. Did you know that babies need 11 mg iron daily – and toddlers need only 7mg? Liver pate (or slow cooked pureed meat) is a great way to top up bub’s iron stores. Ultimately, I am happy to support clients with whichever style of feeding they choose, but I always encourage responsive feeding; not coaxing the spoon into your baby’s mouth.

Should I feed my child rice?
This might feel like a safe first-food option. However, you might be setting your child up to prefer bland food whilst also missing out on key nutrients.
Did you know that most of the calories in breast milk come from fat? So after vegetable purees these are the next foods to focus on. I provide recipes and detailed steps for introducing foods like slow cooked meat, eggs and sardines early one. I also walk new mums through the introduction of potential allergens – as I know how stressful this can be!
When should I introduce nuts?
The latest research suggests early exposure (around six months) to peanuts can actually be protective against food allergies. I encourage clients to introduce most allergens by 12 months and walk them through how best to do this.
Can you help with colic?
If you are breastfeeding, dietary changes can make a huge difference for a colicky baby. I help guide clients through an elimination diet (don’t worry you can keep the morning coffee) plus specific enzymes which can reduce those uncontrollable crying episodes. There are also soothing teas which can be diluted and added to bub’s bottle.
Working with Juliette
"From the very beginning of my pregnancy we discussed diet, exercise and supplements and tweaks things throughout. Now Athena is four months we've started to talk weaning which has already shifted something I found quite daunting into something we're really excited about."
